Our business is setting up teams in India. Here are the roles we would still tell you to keep where you are.
Leadership and the people who set direction
Your co-founders, your heads of function, and anyone whose job is deciding what the company does next. These roles need to be in the room where the hard conversations happen. They also need to be close to the customers, the market and the investors. Put leaders near the decisions.
In-person sales
If your deals close over dinners, site visits or conference floors, the people closing them need to be there. A satellite office can support sales well, with research, outreach and CRM work. The handshake stays local.
Roles your customers expect in their language
If your customers expect support, account management or sales in Dutch, Danish or German, hire people who work in that language natively. Fluent English is a strength of our people. It is not a substitute for your customers’ first language.
Roles that need physical presence
Anything involving hardware in your building, events, facilities, or being on site with customers. If the work happens somewhere physical, the person should be there too.
Roles bound by where data or people must be
Some contracts and regulators require certain work, or certain data, to stay in a specific country or inside the EU. Where that applies, it settles the question.
A team of two that wants one table
If your whole company is two founders and one hire, and sitting together is the way you work best, hire locally. Some stages of a company are about being in the same room, and that is a good reason.
What does travel well
Roles with clear output and good briefs:
- engineering
- QA
- data
- design
- content
- support
- operations
These are the roles where a dedicated person in a real office, with the employment handled around them, does the same work for you.
